Im just humbled by this experience, Martin said about his role as Che in the revival of Evita. We started only a month ago and people from all over the world are traveling to New York City to see this show.

Martin told Extra that the pace of the show causes him to stay in during his time off rather than hit the town. Its really intense, Martin said, adding that his Manhattan pastimes include laying on the couch watching TV and playing with his twin boys Matteo and Valentino.

Reduction of excess brain activity improves memory in amnestic mild cognitive impairment

Research published by Cell Press in the May 10th issue of the journal Neuron, describes a potential new therapeutic approach for improving memory and modifying disease progression in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment. The study finds that excess brain activity may be doing more harm than good in some conditions that cause mild cognitive decline and memory impairment.

Elevated activity in specific parts of the hippocampus, a brain region involved in memory, is often seen in disorders associated with an increased risk for Alzheimers disease. Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), where memory is worse than would be expected for a persons age, is one such disorder. In the case of early aMCI, it has been suggested that the increased hippocampal activation may serve a beneficial function by recruiting additional neural resources to compensate for those that are lost, explains senior study author, Dr. Michela Gallagher, from Johns Hopkins University. However, animal studies have raised the alternative view that this excess activation may be contributing to memory impairment.

Dr. Gallagher and colleagues tested how a reduction of hippocampal activity would impact human patients with aMCI. The researchers used a low dose of a drug used clinically to treat epilepsy, for the purpose of reducing hippocampal activity in subjects with aMCI to levels that were similar to activity levels in healthy, age-matched subjects in a control group. The researchers found that treatment with the drug improved performance on a memory task. These findings point to the therapeutic potential of reducing excess activation in the hippocampus in aMCI.

The results also have broader significance as elevated activity in the hippocampus is also observed in other conditions that are thought to precede Alzheimers disease, and may be one of the underlying mechanisms of neurodegeneration. Apart from a direct role in memory impairment, there is concern that elevated activity in vulnerable neural networks could be causing additional damage and, possibly, widespread disease-related degeneration that underlies cognitive decline and the conversion to Alzheimers disease, concludes Dr. Gallagher. Therefore, reducing the elevated activity in the hippocampus may help to restore memory and protect the brain.

Smartphone users are sacrificing pastimes such as reading books in favour of browsing the internet on their smartphones.

Research from mobile phone site Recombu.com reveals Britons now spend five hours a week browsing the internet on their smartphones, on top of the 20 hours a week spent online while at work.

Since becoming smartphone users, 40 per cent are spending more time on social media sites, a quarter are sending more emails and 22 per cent are browsing internet stores more frequently.

As a result, 26 per cent spend less time reading books, 22 per cent watch fewer TV programmes and 11 per cent are getting less exercise.

Interestingly, 18 per cent are making fewer phone calls as they can now communicate with people via social networks.

Hannah Bouckley, editor of Recombu.com, said: Mobile internet access is a key part of everyday life for many of us.

As the technology continues to develop we will no doubt become even more reliant on the options it offers us.

Over 50 per cent of people in the UK now own a smartphone.

Classic fitness advice says kids need an hour of vigorous activity every day. In theory, that makes sense. In real life, it can be tough figuring out whether your childs gotten 5, 10 or 200 minutes of activity in a day. When theyre in school, youre not there to see what theyre doing. And even when theyre at home playing in the backyard or jumping around in the basement, theyre not actually in constant motion kids play and even most kids games (from kickball to freeze tag to soccer) involve lots of starts and stops.

But a cheap piece of technology could help. Plenty of kids will wear a pedometer. And a new studyof 1,613 kids ages 6 to 19 says that by checking the number on the screen, you can estimate their activity level. Researchers from Canadas Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute determined that kids who get 12,000 steps a day are hitting the 60-minute goal. Step counts are something that children and teens can easily monitor themselves and use to work toward personal health goals, says lead author Rachel Colley, PhD

You could spend $25 to $99 (no, thats not a mis-print!) for a special kids pedometer. But dont do it. Pedometers get dropped, lost, left in pants pockets and run through the washer and dryer. A cheaper model makes more sense; youll find pedometers that cost as little as $5 in local discount stores.

But dont just hand one to your kid or teen. Get one for yourself (experts recommend that adults work up to 10,000 steps daily, roughly 5 miles) and for other family members and start a friendly competition. The more you move, the more your child will, too. In one fascinating French study of 286 families, researchers found that parents who logged the most steps had kids who did, too. Or help your child log her steps on fun Web sites like PE Centrals Log It.

Plenty of kids in the Philadelphia area already wearing pedometers. In West Philadelphia, a program called Dance for Health brought University of Pennsylvania nursing program professors and students out to Sayre High School for weekly dance classes with kids and adults ages 5 to 91. Participants wore pedometers and found that they got twice as many steps on dance days.

?I like to play indoors better because that?s where all the electrical outlets are.?

These oft-quoted words from a fifth grader in Richard?s Louv?s 2005 bestseller, ?Last Child in the Woods,? sum up the challenge that we see here at Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan as we serve today?s girls. Many of today?s children are missing out on the wonders and joy of experiencing nature, lulled into sedentary pastimes by technology.

Camp directors surveyed by the American Camp Association say that the four big reasons why children are losing their connection with nature are: (1) their infatuation with electronics, (2) less access to natural spaces, (3) lack of free time to go outside, and (4) concern about ?stranger danger.?

Yet, we know that discovering nature is so vital for children?s healthy development. Studies tell us that there is a positive correlation between the length of children?s attention spans and their direct exposure to nature. ACA research indicates that camping helps kids in so many ways: kids who go camping have higher levels of confidence and self-esteem, more independence and more adventuresome attitudes.

That?s why Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan provides outstanding outdoor experiences for all girls all summer at our premier camp properties across the state. A week at camp can make all the difference. At camp, girls have important task to accomplish. They take turns taking the lead and they create their own entertainment. We see it all the time at Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan camps: the shy third grader who bubbles over with enthusiasm on a night hike, the anxious middle schooler who masters the kayak.

Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan camps make summer adventure affordable for every girl, and financial aid is available. To learn more, visit www.girlscoutcamp.org <http://www.girlscoutcamp.org> or call 1-800-497-2688 (49-SCOUT).

KELLER – Lorenzo Laohoo loves to cook.

For as long as he can remember, the Keller Middle School seventh-grader has enjoyed spending time in the kitchen. Mom Jennifer Laohoo said she began teaching Lorenzo to cook when he was in kindergarten. For several years, she homeschooled and incorporated math lessons into cooking and baking.

Now one of his favorite pastimes is paying off. Last week, Lorenzo learned he won the 2012 Future Chef contest sponsored by Sodexo, a company that runs school cafeterias in Keller and across the nation. Lorenzo was named top chef in the Keller ISD contest in March and in April advanced to the regional and national finals. More than 900 middle school students entered the contest.

Sodexo posted YouTube videos of the five national finalists preparing their healthy breakfast dishes. Lorenzos winning recipe is his own fried rice creation, Saturday Asian Breakfast.

While Sodexo chefs and child nutrition specialists selected the regional and national finalists, online voters decided the winner.

On April 30, the last day of voting, Jennifer Laohoo received a call from Christi McBroom, Lorenzos homeroom teacher, saying Lorenzo was thousands of votes behind in online voting.

Jennifer Laohoo emailed friends and family and posted a plea on Facebook. Meanwhile, Keller Middle School staff and students were doing their part to get out the vote.

Principal Sandra Chapa said kids and faculty were casting votes on the schools computers whenever they had free time. Teachers and administrators also were voting on their phones.

The communitys efforts paid off with a come from behind victory, said Chris Maggard, KISD child nutrition director.

Lorenzo already has won an Apple iPod Touch and a 3M Shoot n Share video camera. On May 24, he will be honored at a school assembly and will receive a yet-to-be-determined national prize.

District dignitaries and Sodexo officials will attend the event, and child nutrition staff members will prepare about 1,000 servings of Lorenzos dish to share with students, staff and visitors.

Next year, Lorenzo will appear in Sodexos national marketing campaigns. All the hoopla is a little overwhelming. Lorenzo said, Im very shocked. I didnt expect to win, but I just want to say thanks to everyone who voted.

Are Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis friends with benefits?

The new issue of Us Weekly (out Friday) has details on the pairs cozy three-day getaway that kicked off April 19 when Kutcher, 34, drove Kunis 87 miles out of Los Angeles to the seaside town of Carpinteria, Calif.

PHOTOS: Ashtons love life

First on their low-key agenda: Scoping out goods at a roadside vendor. Ashton hung out with his hands in his pockets as Mila shopped, says a witness, who told Us Kunis, 28, picked up sunflowers and blueberries. Later, the pair grabbed lunch at Sushi Teri, where the actress noshed on a veggie roll and a charbroiled salmon salad (Kutcher didnt eat!).

PHOTOS: Milas sexiest looks over the years

The pairs getaway — which wrapped up April 22 when they headed back to LA — comes shortly after their April 15 dinner at LAs Asanebo.

Though theyve enjoyed quite a bit of face time recently, a Kunis source tells Us the actress — who reconnected with Demi Moores cheating ex at a That 70s Show reunion taping after quite a few years apart — is very wary of Kutcher.

PHOTOS: Hollywoods hottest singles

Says the source of Kunis: Mila wouldnt stand for that kind of stuff. Shes a strong, smart girl.
